#182 New American Paintings

I am very excited to share that I have been included in the #182 issue of New American Paintings! You can view the entire issue online newamericanpaintings.com/issues/182/digital

“This is the second time that Beth Rudin DeWoody agreed to serve as juror for us and, once again, her efforts led to an extremely strong Issue of New American Paintings. DeWoody has been a fixture of the art world for decades and her participation naturally led to a lot of excitement among artists, I can think of very few people who have her level of passion and knowledge when it comes to the visual arts; she has boundless energy and curiosity.”

Offerings

Opening reception Saturday, July 4, 2026 2-6 PM

Hawk & Hive Gallery is pleased to present Offerings, a two-person exhibition featuring recent paintings by Carrie Mae Smith and Michael Casey. Opening July 4, 2026, the exhibition brings together two distinct approaches to still life painting, united by a shared attentiveness to the objects and rituals that shape daily life.

Throughout the development of this body of work, Smith has returned to Emily Dickinson’s poem “All I may, if small” as a point of reference. The poem’s attention to scale and its regard for seemingly modest subjects finds a parallel in paintings of flowers arranged in small glasses, simple utensils, and well-used domestic objects. Through sustained observation, these works consider how ordinary things accumulate meaning, revealing traces of care, labor, memory, and daily ritual.

That attention to ordinary acts and objects also shaped the exhibition’s title, Offerings. Across cultures and throughout history, offerings have taken many forms: food placed on a table, flowers gathered in a vase, treasured objects passed from one hand to another. Through their respective approaches to still life painting, Casey and Smith examine the ways commonplace objects accrue significance over time. Attentive to the histories, rituals, and forms of care embedded in daily life, the artists present familiar things not as symbols, but as records of lived experience.

What is it we that we really hunger for?

Author of TheArt of Life, Financial TImes UK, Enuma Okoro included a thoughtful consideration of my painting “White Napkin, Fork and Knife" in her weekly column on May 24, 2026.

“I like the seemingly simplicity of the 2023 work “White Napkin, Fork and Knife” by contemporary American artist Carrie Mae Smith. The daughter of a butcher, Smith spent time working as a chef while deepening her art practice. Her work considers themes of labor, class, tradition, love and utility. This painting shows a plain silver knife and fork, lying on a folded white napkin set against a cream background. There is no place setting, but the napkin appears to be thick and slightly frayed around the edges, which makes me imagine this could be at a public eatery rather than a private home.

“We often turn to food, not simply to stave off hunger, but as a way to feed or recall a certain emotion”

While considering this image, I wondered about a few things. That first was perhaps Obvious what do I feel like eating and strangely enough? I started thinking about peanut butter and honey sandwiches….”

If for once we could do nothing

Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present If for Once We Could Do Nothing, an online exhibition of paintings by Carrie Mae Smith. Taking its title and sensibility from Pablo Neruda’s poem “Keeping Quiet,” the exhibition considers what it means to be still in a time of noise—to listen, to look, and to remember the quiet labor of care.

In this body of work, Smith continues her engagement with still life painting as both a meditative and a subversive practice. Her compositions—tablecloths draped and folded, freshly picked peas in a basket, peaches glowing against a patterned cloth—speak softly but insistently. They are not nostalgic recreations of domesticity, but careful reanimations of the simplicity of nourishment and ritual. “Perhaps the earth can teach us,” Neruda writes, “as when everything seems dead and later proves to be alive.” Smith’s paintings follow that instruction, seeking vitality in stillness and meaning in the everyday.

Featured Artist on PLATFORM

I am thrilled to be included on David Zwirner’s @platform_com in a cohort of incredible talent this month, and what an honor to be featured for a second time!!!

These works are part of my ongoing series of pastries and cakes, which are part of my greater exploration of culinary items and foods. As the daughter of a butcher, my middle-class upbringing informs my consideration of how certain foods, especially highly-priced selections of meats or decadent pastries, mark special occasions and convey societal implications. These works evoke feeling of nostalgia while simultaneously engaging with contemporary themes of consumptions and desire.

Platform is the e-commerce destination for new works by today’s most sought-after contemporary artists. At the beginning of each month, Platform releases a new limited-time selection of artworks to buy now, selected in partnership with David Zwirner and sourced from the country's most exciting independent galleries.

Blue Roses

I’m delighted to announce my upcoming exhibition, Blue Roses, opening on October 26th at Lowell Ryan Projects in Los Angeles! This show reflects my deep affection for flow blue china and the rich sentiments these pieces evoke—memories of past dinner parties, cherished occasions, and the connections we forge through shared food and beloved objects.

As I observed and painted the well-worn golden bands around each plate, serving dish or shallow bowl, I thought about the family who once owned these pieces, the meals lovingly prepared and served on these dishes, the care taken to clean and store them, and the cabinet where they waited patiently for the next special occasion. My thoughts also wandered to the cultural weight these items carry and how changing lifestyles have diminished the significance of formal traditions over time.

This series is both a progression in my artistic practice in terms of exploring formal techniques and a continued expression of my interest in domestic utilitarian objects, their history and significance. I look forward to sharing these new works with you and expanding the lifecycle of this beautiful set of W.H. Gridley, Rose pattern, flow blue china.”
